What is Eczema? |
Triggers |
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a condition that causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. According to the National Eczema Association, approximately 31.6 million people in the U.S. are affected by eczema [2].
Managing EczemaWhile none of these suggestions can cure eczema, they can help manage symptoms. Managing eczema typically involves moisturizing the skin, avoiding triggers, and using medications like corticosteroids or antihistamines to control symptoms [1]. It is important that a healthcare provider approves of medications before use.
|
Eczema is often linked to allergies and asthma and can be triggered by various factors such as irritants, allergens, stress, and climate changes [1]. Other triggers may include certain foods (ex. peanuts), chemicals, synthetic clothing material (ex. nylon), and using hot water when showering and washing hands [1].
SymptomsThe worst symptom of eczema is scratching, which can proliferate skin irritation and disrupt sleep patterns. Skin pain is different for everyone; it may be a burning feeling, a tingle, or even a sting.
